Winter Break: Dec. 23, 2013 - Jan. 3, 2014

Rest, Relax and Rejuvenate!
See you in 2014!

Sue McCabe, HEA President

School Visits

HEA President Sue McCabe visited 10 schools during the month of November to meet and listen to members.

  • Bow Lake Elementary
  • Southern Heights Elementary
  • Cedarhurst Elementary
  • Mount View Elementary
  • Beverly Park Elementary
  • Pacific Middle School
  • Hilltop Elementary
  • Psychologist Group
  • Seahurst Elementary
  • White Center Heights Elementary

WEA UniServ Rep Elizabeth Beck joined at three of the schools and the messages were very consistent across the board.  Member concerns include: working more than ever, professional development, number of testing days, substitute shortage, the high needs of our students and our need for more support to address student need. Overcrowding at the elementary level is a growing concern.

If you are interested in a building visit, please contact your HEA building representative or Sue McCabe.

PIT Time

PIT Time is part of our TRI package. This new change has resulted in lots of discussion regarding what IS and ISN'T PIT Time. The joint bargaining teams collaborated on this concept and are invested in supporting its implementation. After break, a joint HEA/HSD communication will be sent to continue to clarify this new concept.

Committee Appointments

HEA/HSD Joint Committees include:

  • Dual Language
  • Special Education
  • Secondary Assessment Coordination
  • Bargaining
  • Joint Evaluation Committee
  • WAKids
  • Mentor Program Task Force
HEA Committee Appointments will be in the January E-Focus.

Class Size Counts

Educating the public on class size is a huge effort! Currently, there are 202 classes from HSD posted on the Class Size Counts website. Help everyone in Washington learn about class size by posting yours at www.ClassSizeCountsWA.com.

School Board Connections

HSD School Board news: Michael Spears is our recently elected school board president; Tyrone Curry will be serving as vice president, and Angelica Alvarez and Susan Goding were re-elected this past November. Please attend a school board meeting this year. Sue McCabe will host appetizers at Azteca at 5 p.m. for meetings held at ERAC.

HSD Job Fair Success

HEA has shared many concerns regarding the substitute shortage and open vacancies. In response to these issues, HSD held a job fair on Nov. 20, 2013. The event was very successful with 168 candidates attending. HSD issued several letters of intent, hired 4 teachers and hired 32 additional substitutes! None of our surrounding districts held this type of event.  Thank you HR Department!

Student teachers substituting in classrooms need to have certification and must go through employee processing before they can be paid.  If your student teacher is asked to substitute,  they can only be assigned to your classroom and you, as the cooperating teacher, is assigned to fill in for the absent teacher.

FAQs

Q: Do secondary teachers work on Jan. 27?
A: Secondary (grades 7-12) HEA members are NOT contracted to work on Jan. 27. It is a non-school/non-work day for these staff members. If your principal offers a PIT Time opportunity, it is your decision whether to join in the activities. More PIT Time opportunities will be offered.

Q: Is PIT Time outside of the work day?
A: PIT Time is one part of our TRI package. All TRI time occurs outside of the work day.
