Jan. 16 Student Bill of Rights Rally in Olympia!
HEA members joined 6,500 other education advocates in support of fully funding public education! The rally made it clear that pro-public education advocates are building their coalition to require accountability from our state legislators! Thank you to everyone in attendance!

HEA Day of Solidarity for Our Students and Families!
As educators, we are here to serve our students and families, and we believe Highline schools must be a sanctuary for students and families, a welcoming place of protection and safety. The Highline Education Association stands in solidarity with ALL our students, families, and staff.

HEA held "Walk-Ins" on Jan. 19 to make public and visual statements in support of our students and families. Participating schools included Highline High, Hilltop, Beverly Park, Valley View, Mount View, Cascade, Pacific, Marvista, Shorewood, Mount Rainier, TYEE-Global and ACE, Evergreen -- HS3, AAA, TEC, Midway, Madrona. Many staff, students and families joined the effort!  Special thanks to Highline School Board Director Angelica Alvarez for joining the effort at the Tyee Campus and Hilltop Elementary.

Washington Legislative Session: Urgent Action Needed
The 2017-19 Legislative session is in full swing! Feb. 1 was WEA Member Lobby Day. WEA members were out in force to communicate the need for ample school funding.

Gov. Inslee's budget released in December 2016 demonstrated a positive step toward fulfilling the McCleary promise.

Your help is NEEDED NOW! The recent Republican Senate budget will cut educator pay, increase class sizes, lower teacher standards, strip due process rights and open the door to more charter schools.
On your own time, call the legislative hotline at 800-562-6000 and leave a message for your legislators:

  1. Support Gov. Inslee's K-12 funding plan
  2. Oppose the Senate education budget (Senate Bill 5607)

What is a VEBA Account?
VEBA Trust offers two separate health reimbursement arrangement plan designs: the Standard HRA Plan and the Post-separation HRS Plan. All HEA members could have the opportunity to open a VEBA account. Attend an informational meeting to inform yourself. VEBA Info Meetings: Feb. 7, 4 p.m. at ERAC, and Feb. 9, 4 p.m. at Cedarhurst.

We will hold an all membership vote to determine if HEA employees will join VEBA. The outcome of the vote will be the same for all members. If the membership votes in support, all HEA educators would open a VEBA account. Come to a VEBA Meeting! Visit veba.org for more information.
