Dear HEA Members,
Your HEA leadership team wishes you a restful break.  The New Year often provides us an opportunity to resolve to take care of ourselves as well as check a few things off our to-do list.  We appreciate you, and we encourage you to find a balance that works for you!

Legislators Need to Listen!  January 20 is WEA's Educator Lobby day. Organize your friends, family and colleagues, and join us for a powerful day at the Capitol in Olympia.  Our priorities are clear.  We need your voice as we fight for racial and social justice, supports for students, and laws that limit the reach of the Freedom Foundation into our personal lives.  Please sign up to join other HEA members and Rainier UniServ colleagues in lobbying that day, and we’ll get you on board.

We Need to Hear from You, Too!  Please support your HEA Reps as they attempt to support you.  A building-level survey has been sent to Reps as a way to gather information on educator health, safety, and needed supports for our students.  When your Reps send out an all-call for your next HEA building meeting or request to be on the shared leadership agenda, please make time to explore issues as a group.  Our goal is to work with the district to improve student support and safety in the buildings. This information will help us understand the scope of the need and guide support to where it is needed.  Self-contained special education classroom teachers will receive a separate survey next month.  Listening sessions will take place in February and bargaining surveys will follow soon after.

Your Records Here. Please update your union information, including your work site. It only takes a few minutes. 

New Employee Assistance Program (EAP). With changes to our healthcare, HSD has contracted with First Choice Health starting January 1 to provide an EAP. Benefits will be similar to the current plan with Cigna. Look for a flyer in January with more information on services to support you and your family.

Recertification Got You Stumped? HEA is partnering with HSD to offer a 3-hour WEA workshop to be held on the next Job-alike Optional Day--January 17, 2020 2-5pm at the Evergreen Library.  Register here for teachers or here for ESAs   Watch for follow-up WEA courses that will support you in leveraging Personal Growth Plans (PGPs) to recertify using work you are already doing.

Maintain Your Professional License. Do you know when your professional license expires?  We maintain our own professional certification. Please keep your account up to date. Even if you are Nationally Board Certified, you must enter your board certification information into your account in order to renew your teaching license.

NY 2020 Resolution One: Turn In Your Clock Hours. TURNING IN YOUR CREDITS AND CLOCK HOURS IS THE ONLY WAY TO MOVE TO THE RIGHT ON THE SALARY SCHEDULE. The district is working on offering a paperless approach to clock hour verification. In the meantime, you must continue to scan and send your clock hours to Human Resources.  Your other option is to drop off a copy of your clock hours to the Central Office Receptionist between 8AM and 4PM.  Please get a date stamp and keep a copy for yourself.  

NY 2020 Resolution Two: Get Clock Hours for Your Building-Based PD. Your in-building PCT time as well as your work with a coach or a consultant could generate clock hours if it is contributing to your professional learning.  To do so, HOWEVER, it must be offered by an authorized clock hour provider.  Your SLT/PLT members should talk with your administrators about 1) preregistering course descriptions, 2) getting sign-in sheets, and 3) completing feedback forms for any of the PD at your site.  If an administrator needs more information on how to set that up for your school, please have them contact Adriana Lara-Espinosa.
