August 12, 2022

Dear Supporter,

Happy summer everyone!  This is our inaugural EFocus issue for the 2022-23 school year, and I hope it finds everyone in good health and well rested.  I appreciate those who have been reaching out with questions about contract changesThe newly bargained contract language and salary schedule will be uploaded on the HEA website under the contracts tab after it is approved by the HSD School Board, (likely on August 17) and reformatted by the district. HEA Reps and HSD Administrators will receive a hard copy as soon as it is available.  For ease of use, a bulleted summary of changes is also available.

Many thanks to those who have been engaged in union work over the summer.  Last spring you elected eight members to attend the NEA Representative Assembly held in Chicago this year:  Benjamin Folgers, Chad Harper, Christina Hagerty, Edissa Jaramillo, Shawna Moore, Leslie Sokolik, Brandice Tranholt, and Katie Utesch.  In addition, I attended as your HEA President and Jeb Binns represented WEA as an NEA Board Member.  I strongly encourage you to scroll through the 2022 NEA RA website for videos and summaries of the main events, including a rousing in-person speech by Vice President Kamala Harris. The assembly continued the union’s commitment to safe, equitable, and just schools for all through the policies and budget adopted for the upcoming school year.  Next summer’s assembly is slated to meet in Orlando. I encourage you to consider running as a delegate for the NEA RA (June 30-July 7, 2023) and/or WEA RA (April 13-15, 2023).  Both two and one-year terms are typically available.

Please enjoy the remaining days of summer and watch for union updates on Fridays.

In solidarity,

Sandy

1. HEA Representative Council News

Much appreciation to those who have served as HEA Representatives in our buildings and programs. The last week of August/first week of September is the time to conduct elections and email names to Portia Robinson and cc Sandy Hunt if you have not done so yet.  We appreciate receiving representatives’ names by September 9.

Several buildings have no returning HEA Reps (Cedarhurst, Chinook, Choice, New Start, Seahurst) and several reps have already indicated their buildings need new reps (Bow Lake, PSSC), and there are likely more.  In addition, we are welcoming educators to the new Highline Virtual Elementary (HVE) which will be eligible for one representative.  Contact information for HEA leaders, including our Executive Board, can always be found on the HEA website.

Below are the HEA Representative Council dates for the first half of the year.  HEA Representative Council and Executive Board Meetings are open to all HEA members except when in Executive Session.  The first HEA Executive Board Meeting will be hybrid on August 22 (4:00-6:00PM).  Please email Veronica Fairchild  to confirm meeting locations or to access the link if virtual.  A survey will be sent to HEA Reps in September to identify their preferences for in-person, virtual, or another alternative.

  • August 29 (Virtual 4:00PM-5:30PM).  HEA Vice-President Jeb Binns will introduce the HEA budget.
  • September 12 (In person 4:30-6:00PM).  UniServ Director Elizabeth Beck will present our New Rep Training.  Experienced Reps are welcome if they wish a refresher.  There is NO HEA Rep meeting this month.  This will be an in-person meeting, tentatively scheduled for Highline High School.
  • October 3 (Combination 4:30PM-6:30PM).  HEA and HR leadership will review key CBA changes. To facilitate in-person break out sessions Labor-Management teams will zoom in from the same room in their buildings.  HSD Directors will be asked to partner with ESAs and Specialists. A brief HEA Rep. meeting will be held at the conclusion of the CBA training.
  • November 7 (4:30PM-6:15PM). November/December Rep Council Meeting (location TBD).
  • January 9 (4:30PM-6:15PM).  January Rep Council Meeting (location TBD).
