Dear  Supporter,

Welcome back to school and to your union for those returning, and welcome to the Highline Education Association for those who are new to the district!  This Labor Day we recognize the resurgence of the labor movement around the country and in our own backyards.  HEA members are dedicated to building solidarity within our own local, between HEA and the Teamsters (the other represented members in the district), with other WEA affiliated groups such as KEA in Kent, and among unions through our membership in the MLK King County Labor Council. 

There are so many opportunities to demonstrate community and build power among our fellow workers.  This can be as simple as WEARING BLUE ON TEAMSTER TUESDAYS and WEARING RED FOR ED ON WEDNESDAYS.  Below you will find links to send statements of support for educators across the state, to them directly and to their school boards.  Throughout this newsletter you will find many ways to enjoy the strength and the fellowship of union membership.

For example, we need your time, energy and donations to pass the much needed replacement bond to build new schools for Evergreen HS, Tyee HS and Pacific MS students.  HEA is working with Yes for Highline to implement strategies for bond passage.  Please mark your calendar for Saturdays in October (8, 15, 22 and 29) when we will be doorbelling selected households.  Sign up with your school for one or more phone banking opportunities.  Another way you can contribute to this effort is sharing pro-bond messages on your social media accounts. 

Between May through September, my husband and I are matching HEA member bond donations 1-1 so this is a great time to double your impact (up to $3000).  Many thanks to Lori, Matthew, Michelle and David who have brought HEA member contributions up to $650.  Please dig deep and continue to push us up to the $3000 mark.  Donate here

1. Member Representation Matters

HEA committees are important to the health of our union and impact how we address challenges in our workplaces.  If you are considering being involved in union work that helps HEA be more transparent, democratic and impactful, please reach out by completing this form.  

  • HEA Committees are critical to advancing the voice, power, and professional advocacy of our members.
  • HEA-HSD Joint Committees are established through the bargaining process and meet several times each year to work on charges found in our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) or Letters of Agreement These groups frequently make recommendations to the Joint HEA-HSD Bargaining Teams and/or to the HSD Board of Directors.
    • (NEW) Secondary Dual Language Study Committee.
    • (NEW) Joint Inclusive Services Team.
  • SY 22-23 Curriculum Adoption Teams (see district website to apply)
    • Secondary Music (continuing)
    • Elementary Science (continuing)
    • Secondary Science (continuing)
    • K-12 Health (may be divided elementary/secondary)
    • 9th grade Biology
    • Secondary (Upper level) Math 

2. Union Solidarity

Members have been asking how they can help those on strike in Kent and in the middle of hard bargains in other locals.  Using the links below is a simple way to show your solidarity.

As a Kent educator, Carrie Howell, one of our own school board members is on strike.  At the same time, one of our WEA members, Renton teacher Joe Bento who was elected to the Kent School Board, has played a key role in preventing an injunction to return to work from being file against KEA.  Port Angeles EA President (see below) is also on his local school board in Sequim.

Kent Education Association has been on strike since Aug. 25. 

Seattle Education Association is voting on strike authorization. Its contract expired Aug. 31 and its first student day is Sept. 7.

You can send a message urging the district to settle a fair contract with Seattle Education Association members.

Port Angeles Education Association voted to authorize a strike beginning Sept. 6. Its contract expired Aug. 31 and its first student day is Sept. 1.

Ridgefield Education Association has voted to authorize a strike. Its contract expired Aug. 31, which was also its first student day. Bargaining teams are due to meet again Sept. 7.

Eatonville Education Association voted to authorize a strike. Its contract expired Aug. 31 and its first (scheduled) student day is Sept. 7 unless an agreement is not reached before the start of school.

3. September and October Events

  • HEA New Rep Training (Veteran reps are welcome!) – September 12 @4:30 (In person only at Highline High School.  Dinner provided.)

  • Marinier Game Night with HEA ! Select from the following: Friday, Sept. 9 and/or Wednesday Sept. 28 @ 6:40PM
